It may have fallen off your radar that over Halloween, an Atheist student group in our backyard made a wacky irreverent display of gravestones for deities “we”, they said, now consider “only mythical”. They didn’t seem to recognize, when we approached them peacefully, that since they didn’t believe gods were real, the thing they were celebrating was actually religious violence and cultural genocide - the wiping out of worshipers and their traditions, some of which is still going on today.
So we held a memorial.
Each of the glasses in the center of the table represented a group of cultures, and a candle was lit for every Holy Power that UW-Madison AHA called (let’s be honest) stupid and meaningless.
Prayers submitted by fellowpagans from ~around~the~world~ were read, with a libation (of white or red wine, water, whiskey, or rum) was poured for each named deity. People sat, stood or knelt as they were able and moved to. The prayers amounted to 25 pages read by several volunteers, and went on for almost an hour solid, and the eulogies for the dead made up a history lesson that spoke of polytheist strength, complexity, and irrepressibility, as the lit candles marched from the metaphorical past (the Gods and civilizations of ancient Caanan) to the metaphorical present (the native people and Holy Powers of Australia, practitioners of folk Daoism and Chinese Traditional Religion, and the Afro-Carribbean Diaspora)
They are all well-remembered indeed, and we wish strength and safety to those fighting to keep their ways of life.
a thousand thanks, to everyone near and far who made this ritual a success.
